As an active member of SusanA (Sustainable Sanitation Alliance) at african and
international levels, DELVIC Sanitations Initiatives and the Department of Sanitation, Water, and Solid Waste
for Development at Eawag, SANDEC worked
togheter in a research project on faecal sludge. The goal was to collect faecal
sludge samples in public and private sanitation facilities. To achieve this
goal, DELVIC Sanitations Initiatives worked closely with VICAS, one of a key
members of sanitation private sector and the Institute of Environmental
Sciences (IES) of SENEGAL.

Who are you?
My name is Barbara Ward and I am a researcher at
Sandec, the Department of Sanitation, Water, and Solid Waste for Development at
Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology. I am in
Dakar to collaborate with Delvic Sanitation Initiatives.
I am studying faecal sludge dewatering to make
management and treatment more efficient.
What was the purpose of your mission?
Sandec's mission was to collect and analyze faecal
sludge samples and questionnaire data to determine chemical, biological, or
social predictors for dewatering performance. We did this in collaboration with
Delvic Sanitation Initiatives, which has a mandate from the National Sanitation
Office to operate the four faecal sludge treatment plants in Dakar, Senegal.
How DELVIC SANITATION INITIATIVES helps SANDEC in this study?
Delvic Sanitation Initiatives provided the engineering
management, logistics, experienced staff, and practical expertise to execute
Sandec's vision.
We worked closely with Dr. Amadou Gueye to design a
data collection plan.
Sandec will continue to collaborate with Delvic Sanitation
Initiative as we publish our findings.
What was amazing in this mission in studies?
As a representative of Sandec, it was amazing to work
with such a great group of faecal sludge experts and engaged students at Delvic
Sanitation Initiatives!
Did you recommend DELVIC SI to University community? Fecal sludge
community? As part of an academic research institute, Sandec can
fully recommend collaborating with Delvic Sanitation Initiatives to the faecal
sludge community.
In addition to executing a well-managed field project,
Delvic Sanitation Initiatives also has a strong background in scientific
research, strong connections with local universities, and partners in faecal
sludge management.
